Almost a year has passed since the start of AI Hokusai, our research project at the intersection of art and technology, and it is time to take stock. We have published a printed journal, AI HOKUSAI: Reflections on Art, Artificial Intelligence and Heritage, and made its digital version available in a dedicated section of the project website.
I particularly recommend the virtual environment for the exhibition AI Hokusai: Legacy Encoded. It is based on an inspiring architectural design by French architects that felt ideal for a virtual world drawing on Hokusai’s aesthetic and landscapes. As visitors move through its levels, the light gradually changes from morning to sunset, creating an almost cinematic sense of presence.
I am grateful to the entire team — partners, co-curators, artists, experts, architects, VR developers, technical specialists, researchers and sociologists. This was an extensive collaborative process, and it is rewarding that the results are now accessible to everyone.
The report brings together project analysis, expert interviews, curatorial essays and documentation of the Art+AI residency and virtual exhibition. It is both a research document and an artistic record. We intend to bring it to CultTech Summit 2025 in Vienna, where we will present AI Hokusai and lead two roundtable discussions.
