The major project of my last two years, Almaty Museum of Arts, has finally opened to all visitors. Two floors of contemporary art, two major exhibitions, three outdoor artworks, extraordinary architecture and materials, and an entire art street inside the building make it a place with a distinctive character.
Without false modesty, I consider this the largest private contemporary art museum in Central Asia today. I invested as much of my museum planning experience and knowledge as possible into the project: building a long-term foundation, equipping the museum with advanced technologies, designing an effective administrative structure, and recruiting an excellent team of staff and volunteers. I remain involved as Director of Development.
I am deeply grateful to the museum’s founder, entrepreneur and philanthropist Nurlan Smagulov, whose energy and determination made this ambitious project possible.
And what a view of the mountains! The café’s dishes and desserts are another delight. There are children’s weekend workshops, a year-round education programme and a museum shop where it is very easy to linger on the way out.
